Hello folks...

Ok here's the deal...

Ever since i installed the Xara 15 day trial i had nothing but fatal errors left-right & center...and then back to left again, just to make sure it was comPLETEly ticking me off.

I get the same error all the time.
Here it is for those who might know what it means:

It happens under a number of situations; none of which, in my mind, are valid to produce such an error. My system is not tricked-out in ANY way. I have more than enough Ram, my grafx card (ATI Rage Fury 128 w/32meg) drivers are "up-to-the-minute", i'm running the exact same OS (Win 98) as i have been for Xara 2 (which runs flawlessly i might add).

After a file has been opened/created for about 10-15 minutes, using these tools/functions causes the aforementioned error:

Repeatly causes error:

- adjusting the size of a Fractal Fill
- adjusting the effect of a Repeating Gradient Fill
- adjusting the smoothing amount of a Feather setting
- almost ANYthing to do with Transparency and/or it's settings

1x errors:

- adjusting a bevel's width
- adjusting a shadow's smoothness

Other notes:

The program seems incapable of remembering my default template settings, and even refused to open on 1 occassion.

The program keeps adding duplicate colour swatches to the front (left side) of my swatch strip - so far just White & Black. And it will not remember my 'visible' swatch defaults for my template either.

After 10-15 minutes, on my last occassion, the icons began to appear corrupted as i touched or moved anything. A few seconds later, it crashed.

Final notes:

I am NOT doing anything extreme that would/should cause the program to have a heart attack. All i'm trying to do is get a feel for how the new tools work and see what they're capable of.
And in case anyone's wondering, yes, i've unIstalled and reInstalled the program, once.

To say the least, i'm now thoroughly UNimpressed. And as i said before...

Fortunately this behaviour is most unusual, though I appreciate that is little comfort to you.
We will obviously investigate this ASAP, thanks very much for the detail in the report, this makes fixing the problem much easier.
If it is a graphics card problem then this should be easy to solve as the fundamentals of Xara X's dialogue with a graphics card is largely unchanged from CorelXara2 and, as you say, that works flawlessly, so we should be able to deliver the same peformance in Xara X

Thanks for the quick response Mark. I appreciate the extra time/work on this problem, especially if it is just ME having it.

I've seen that sort of errors too often in the last week. Often enough to uninstall XaraX for the time being. I can but hope that the CD version is better than this 15 day trial I paid $80 for, even the first beta was more stable than this.
I tried several PC's (PII-350,PIII-550) several versions of Windows, graphicboards Matrox G200-400 & Permedia 2. Memory from 128-256 Mb. Clean installs aka only Win95, Win98, Win98SE & XaraX on the PC , result remains the same, from fatal errors to 30-40 secs for a "dynamic" change to appear. Think the longest Xx runs without an error is about 20 mins.

The problems described sure sound like classic video card/driver problems to me. ATI cards seem to have more than their share of problems, even with the latest drivers installed.

One thing you can try is to turn your video acceleration OFF. See if that helps. If it does, it's probably a video problem.

and so I downloaded the latest upgrade which ran a few times without a hassle after which the program decided that I had "not enough rights to run the program". Quite a remarkable feat on a standalone system running W98. No amount of uninstalling-reinstalling and/or digging in the registry will change it, so in about 6 weeks I'll probably be the proud owner of an $80 beermat. I'm really going to miss I-US , with that nice 30-day moneyback guarantee.
