Create the table first, then add your color bands or boxes.

++1 Agree. You've motivated me to follow through on my intent to add this to "Dear Xara". With this you could more easily simulate tables, as above. This is what you must do in Visio. It's klutzy, but would be a step in the right direction.
Also, between this and all the numerous other posts on Talkgraphics (do a search) lamenting the lack of native table support, one would hope that this would be an active task high on the priority list for the Xara developers.

What I have proposed before is Xara enable a Tables folder in the Design gallery where you would copy across an n-columned row with themed colours for background and border.
It would be rudimentary but native Xara and extensible from a "graphics" perspective (no code, etc).
