I decided to put my idea into a picture, I was thinking that instead of black for the background maybe a complementary color such as a dark maroon or burgundy, the reflection is optional. Just a thought portrayed here although I still like the way you did it.

EDIT: Looking at what I did I find I don't really like the reflection added.

beret: Yes, I did think of that and the dark background does make it stand out.
Steve: 'Teeth marks'?! It's real gold. I don't need to test it!
James: I have no idea what William Tell looks like?!
David: 'fan-bois'?! The Mac world and the OS is a strange experience.
Larry: The dark backgrounds and reflections seems to be a preference, but, I deliberately went with the gold one. And I genuinely appreciate the input from you and beret.

Everyone will have their own preferences and I like that.

Any ideas on how to improve the Apple_Windows logo itself?

Yes Rik, use a darker background, that'll do the trick.

OK. I thought I would add a reflection as one of the seggestions.

And, (Bob is now telling me as well) it seems that I will need to have a go at a darker background.

Later I'll give that a go as well and see how it looks.

Frances: If I do use the logo for my Desktop, then it is going to be in the centre of my screen and I am not going to have anything else near or around the logo. So, whilst your observation is good, I'm probably not going to go down that road. If however, I decide to make a scene, then what you say is correct. Input appreciated

beret: I've been trying to concentrate on the Apple itself and would have to say that I've not paid too much attention to the background and the direction of the light etc... But, of course, to keep you happy, that's the next thing I will look at! Input appreciated.
