    Default Stay Tuned For The Translation Workshop - Translations Wanted

    Gary and I are thrilled at the enthusiastic reception his first Xara Xone video tutorial has received.

    Some on this forum have said that translations of the video into other languages including other forms of English other than Gary's US-Upstate NY English would be helpful. And some multi-lingual Xarists have offered to translate. We invite anyone out in XaraLand who would like to contribute a translation to participate in making these videos useful to as many people around the world as possible.

    I will be moderating the Translations Workshop, a sub-form, where anyone who wants to supply a translation or offer corrections or other comments on an existing translation; including my own Gary to English captioning can participate. The Translation Workshop subfourm should be online soon.

    Now if anyone would like to get a head start on translating Gary's first video tutorial, please download the attached copy of the English captioning file. To use the captioning file please use a text editor to replace the English in the file with the new language phrase. You can upload your translation in replies to this thread or in the Translation Workshop when that comes online.

    Please take care not to change the formatting or the time stamps. If possible keep each line no longer that 65 to 70 characters. To continue on a second line press your Enter key once. Two lines of captioning are OK but three or more and it really interferes with watching the video. The text file should be in UTF-8 so if you need to use accents and other diacritics go ahead. You don't have to do an absolutely literal translation -- we are looking for language that conveys the thought accurately and for language that sounds natural in phrasing and word choice.

    For example (and I am using Google to do the translation so don't laugh too hard OK?)

    English version:

    1
    00:00:00,849 --> 00:00:05,090
    Hi I'm Gary Bouton. Happy New Year and the Alka Seltzer
    is in the medicine cabinet upstairs.

    2
    00:00:05,090 --> 00:00:09,079
    Welcome to the Xara Xone. Today we're going to take a look

    French version

    1
    00:00:00,849 --> 00:00:05,090
    Salut je m'appelle Gary Bouton. Happy New Year et
    le Alka Seltzer est à l'étage armoire à pharmacie.

    2
    00:00:05,090 --> 00:00:09,079
    Bienvenue à la Xone Xara. Aujourd'hui, nous allons jeter un oeil

    I posted the French translation to Gary today before I saw this post. Please tell him to ignore my file and I'll get the CC file done a.s.a.p., it won't take too long

    I hope my translation will be an improvement on "le Alka Seltzer est à l'étage armoire à pharmacie." <-- that made me laugh

    If someone tried to make me dig my own grave I would say No.

    Thank goodness you and other Xaraists will save us from the wonderful weirdness of Google translation.

    I'm not at all surprised that the Google translation made you laugh (or cry perhaps). I did the translation from Google's machine transcription of Gary's speech to the Google's version of English Captions. The machine "heard" Gary say a lot of strange stuff like:

    "forty-fifth repugnant khalid because the
    wife if extraction in this tutorial your "

    Reminded me a bit of the translation machine in one of my favorite movies, Mars Attacks!

    "Martian Translator Device: All green of skin... 800 centuries ago, their bodily fluids include the birth of half-breeds. For the fundamental truth self-determination of the cosmos, for dark is the suede that mows like a harvest. "

    I don't know what's so funny.

    That's what I said, word for word.

    I'd like some cheese on my shoe and please feed it to my grandmother,

    My ex-wife and I used to communicate using Yahoo chat whilst sitting in adjacent offices - this is even sadder

    Many, Many Thanks!!!

    I've got it posted to YouTube and it is working nicely there. Click on the CC button and you now have the choice of English or French captions. I'll get it installed in the XaraXone player later.

    Time for dinner now.

    Thank you for the Welcome.

    I have a confession to make. I've been a "member" of TalkGraphics for a long time; but I was a lurker.

    I have a message to all you other lurkers out there and I know there are lots of you -- I had plenty of company -- TG is a nice, safe community, full of folks who really do want to be nice to you and help you if they can.
    All they ask is that you be nice in return and help others if and when you can. And when you decloak, you get to remove the quote marks around the word member.
