    Tracing paper. Lightly mark the shapes then go over them filling in detail with ink. Then you can scan. A lot of graphic artists use digital tools with artwork that began life as a hand drawing. You could even scan the photo, and print it out onto white paper as a very feint image that won't show on a subsequent scan.

    i was watching a programme about 4 foreign cartoonistswho live in berlin.
    They all draw on paper and use sable brushes,and pencils,from what i saw.
    Since the more recent versions of Xara make freehand easier to use, I wonder why most still prefer to waste money on ink and use paper instead of tablets?

    It's not about money, it's about the tactile experience and working in a medium they are comfortable in. I still think it's quicker and easier to make an ink drawing on paper than on a computer.

    it is,but not so easy to correct when inking and coloring

    I guess some people like a mix of modern and traditional media. Each to their own.

    wacom tablet,the cheapest ones
