Constrain a custom brush-drawn line?

Hello,

I haven't made custom brushes for a long time. I think I am forgetting something very simple. The brush consists of a little icon of a man, that I want to use to draw lots of straight lines, to look like an army. What am I doing wrong? I can't seem to find any way to constrain the brushed line once I draw it. I can draw only wiggly lines of men. It must be possible because in my practising I can see one of the lines is truly straight. Not sure if I did this by luck, but need to find out how to repeat that. The straight line brush tool doesn't seem to pick up brushes, but that would be good if it did. Can't find anything about this in the help or manual.

Am really being slowed up by this, so many thanks in advance if you can help.

Michael, you angel. Thank you so much. Is there any way to drag a button somewhere to get the pen tool back? Now I know why there was such a debate about it for version 7!

you should be able to apply a custom brush to a straight line after it has been drawn

add button:

although at present it does not work on flyout - hopefully this will soon be fixed - but just put it on the toolbar itself maybe, as Gerry suggests
