Very cool design, Gary!
I do have one question... why is North at 180?
Normally it's designated 0° or 360°...
I can understand the N actually being S, since it is an auto compass and it is showing which way you are going to...but if that's the case, then it seems the 0° should be under the N, since we are heading towards 0°.
I readily admit that I am not the compass-master, but I am curious, since it seems counter-intuitive...
Peace
James
I enjoyed this one Gary.
Particularly the bit where we grouped things together, in order, and then were able to apply fills.
So, here's my effort.

James - This probably explains why I am always getting lost.
The image I was working from did not show much more and so I had to fake it. And to think that I was a cartographic draftsman when I was in the Army (it was a few years back).
Thanks Rik for the proofreading. The tutorial has been corrected (except North being at 180°.)

I did some modifications if anyone is interested including getting my degrees straight.
I added a bit of liquid under the floating compass and to get the bottom shape to align better with the half sphere, I included the bottom dark gray portion of the sphere in the bitmap and included the entire right half of the deformed bitmap instead of just the top 1/4.

270 is W not E. E is 90....
John.
There seems to be a great 'degree' of talk here!
So, here's a picture instead.

Decided to have another go, because, you wouldn't really see that much of the compass.
Not saying that it's perfect but hopefully a bit better.

Great job, Rik
You have a good eye (and the patience) to get things just right.
Additionally, you promote Xara products very well, because you have a natural flair for this kind of work.
Keep 'em coming!
James
