Default transparent background for line drawing

in photoshop...I can't figure out just how to make the white background to a line drawing transparent, so that I can overlay and see another line drawing underneath. I have them saved as jpegs?

    don't use jpeg

    use png, or psd even

    jpeg does not support transparency

EDIT = PS make sure you hide/delete any background layer and have your drawing on a seperate layer before you save

Try changing the blend mode to Multiply.

Select>Color Range - Select: Highlights - Click OK
If background layer, unlock by dragging lock icon in the layer panel to the trash can
    hit delete key
All the white should now be transparent
