distorted fonts

i want to create distorted fonts...
1: convert fonts to objects with points and lines
trouble is cant get a decent grab on the parts
it just picks at bits of them looking horrible
how do I bend whole part of a font character?

After converting font to editable objects and ungrouping the letters, marque or shift select all the nodes on the part of the letter you you wish to distort with the shift tool. Then move the selected nodes with the shift tool.
