    Jim, as you said not all fonts support the same alt codes.

    You can use Character Map (Accessories > System Tools) to view what characters are available within any truetype font you have on your machine.

    In the attached image the empty cells indicate characters that do not exist within the selected font. In the case of this image the font is Arno Pro.

    Text you see on this forum are using the web safe font's installed on your system.

    This is all very strange to me, but I'll go with it
    In the Character Map, some require (as an example) U+0021. What is "U"?

    Jim don't confuse the U with the Keystroke as shown in the lower right of the image as seen from your viewpoint.

    The U+xxxx cannot be used to enter characters.

    Thanks, I couldn't figure that one out, even after reading all about Unicode.
