In web search and search engine optimization (SEO), URL canonicalization deals with web content that has more than one possible URL. Having multiple URLs for the same web content can cause problems for search engines - specifically in determining which URL should be shown in search results.

    Hope it helps ..

Odd that Google's Search Engine Optimization Guide does not contain that word.

The guide does state that SEO only effects organic searches and not "AdWords". The AdWords will always appear first and to the left of organic search results.

    Cheers perseus, so it's c14n

For anyone else wondering Wiki goes on:

    Example:
    http://www.wikipedia.com
    http://wikipedia.com
    http://www.wikipedia.com/
    http://www.wikipedia.com/?source=asdf
All of these URLs point to the homepage of Wikipedia, but a search engine will only consider one of them to be the canonical form of the URL.
I think I'm not going to loose any sleep over this one

This is what the head of Google’s Webspam team has to say about it :

    Hi Perseus,

It looks like a classic case of google's right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing.

Often a good indication that an organization (corporation) has grown beyond manageability.

OK I guess I will have to hire someone to sort this all out for me.

In the meantime, would it be possible for me to upload just one page that amends the contact details page? I know this is not possible through WD, but could I make a new page, then somehow upload this to the correct url, replacing the current contact page, perhaps through filezilla?

Im not sure I understand what the problem is. Is it just your contact page ? The one I see now is not correct ?
You should easily be able to upload a new contact page with hurting anything else that was changed and I doubt that changing that page is going to affect your search engine placement.
I dont see anything in the source code that looks like it was changed for SEO.
