placeholder always square

Hi.
Whenever I try to open a rectangle/placeholder, it always defaults as an enlarging square with a locked aspect ratio.
I remember it allowing me just to drag and drop at some point in the past, unless I'm losing my mind.
Is there any way I can get that back?
I've looked into the options and can't seem to find anything that would control that.
