How To Create Transparent Orb In AI

Hi There, did a bit of searching TG and Google, could not find the answer. How do I create a transparent vector orb in AI as per the attached sample. excluding the text - I just added that to show you what I need to do.

The text was placed behind the Orb, so you see there is more transparency in the centre than on the outside edge.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

AFAIK only the CS4 version of illustrator does graduated transparency - if you have CS4 you can do this directly by giving the object a gradient fill of type radial and taking the opacity of the appropriate gradient slider down to zero - its then a question of adjusting gradient sliders until you get the ramp correct [you may need to add more sliders]

do you have CS4 - I do not think you can do it in earlier versions?

Ok Barry - so you will have to fall back onto opacity masks I think - here is the way to do it in principle:

All you have to do is to change the linear to radial to get the effect that you want. This video is aimed at CS and above but below 4.
