I was going by the refections in the picture. The softbox is visible on the right earring, the round left dish is visible on the left earring and I was so sure you had a light ring around the lens (as seen refected in the eyes)!

Hi Paul.
Most times you can figure out the type of lighting used by the shape and placement of the catchlights. The catchlight for most ringflashes is straight back towards the camera from my experience. The camera lens is usually in the center of the ring flash. A beauty dish will be off to one side. Depending on the intensity of the fill it can either be a softbox or an efficient reflector.
The catchlight is rather large and off to one side so I would have guessed a large beauty dish. The soft square fill is visible in the right eye (your right). The intensity is several stops lower than the key and is placed almost to the side of the model. it is not visible in the left eye. the key light is at about 45 degrees from the model. The catchlight is visible in both eyes and to the left of center.
Figuring out the light placement/intensity of the strobes/lighting is fun if you have a shot with enough detail.
John - I'm concerned about that baby hanging in your studio. I think I'll have to call Child Protective Services and turn you and your greedy wife in!
Great photo of your wife. So what was the first law?

... and I suppose the Cabbage Patch Kid lights up the eyes of children who won't smile?
Hi Ross and Dave,
That is Suzzy Slutamuss, my crash test dummy. I use that doll to do lighting tests. She doessn't complain and can hold the same pose all day long.
I will pass on the compliment. You will have to wait until I do another shot in the series for other rules of women.
