Each time I apply multiple live effects, the program crashes. Either that or I am unable to open the documents with live effects applied. I get an "unable to read file " error message. Has this happened to any other xtreme users?

Maybe.
Could you list the steps and LE's you used please?
This way we can try to recreate the problem.
Thanks
I'll add a shape, apply an effect (gausian blur) 96 DPI. Then I may apply a second effect (Bump Map) also 96 DPI. As soon as I apply the second effect, 1 of 3 things happen:
1) Program crashes (out of memory error)
2) layer with multiple effects becomes "locked" I can't select or manipulate that layer in any way.
3) everything seems fine. I continue working and save the document. Later When I try to re-open the document, I get an error message "Failed to read XAR file".
Following your steps I cannot repeat the errors in Xtreme Pro 4.0.1 CD Jul 4 2008
Can you open the attached .xar file?
Perhaps you could attached yours for comparison?
Please also mention:
- what version of Xara you're running
- what OS
- how much RAM
- what graphics card
all of these may give us an idea as to why yours is crashing and mine isn't
PS. why give something a gaussian blur LE when feathering does the same thing except retains its vector properties? Just a thought.
If someone tried to make me dig my own grave I would say No.

It's true... even if it's a bitmap that you want to blur, you can just use the sharpness slider in the photo tool

Whoops - there's me getting feather and blur mixed up.
Time to put my other brain in I think...
There, that's better!

Still a bit yellow, but much better than before

Perhaps that's what happened to me too. I just deleted the file because I could not open it. I got the same error message. I had used a live effect and I think I then used another. The program went very slow and I got out. Next time it would not open.
Did you get an error message when you tried to reopen the file?
I've been using a lot of clipped photos lately. Very often, I can't open the file in Xtreme 4 again, and it isn't because of LE. When I get an error message, it says something about 4331. The same file opens just fine in Xtreme 3.24, but a message about data from a later version displays. That message also mentions 4331.
If you have 3.24, you might try opening the file in that version, and what happens.
