Hi John,
You might be trying to OVER think this thing. MY TAKE is that Charles gave us the information he wanted us to have to let the the "creative monster" take on whatever shape it wanted to take.
I approached the project like this:
PROJECT SCOPE
A logo for a new product that would be used on the Xara website along with the OTHER product logos to attract attention to the product. It needs to be web friendly for the site ... and print friendly for packaging. It needs to tell the potential buyer/user what it is at a glance, and be somewhat consistant with the logo's of other Xara products. It is likely NOT to appear on business cards, letterhead, or embroidered items ... and therefore some license may be taken in it's complexity.
That's what I worked from ... if it is incorrect then my designs likely won't fit into the scope of what Charles was looking for. I'm sure if he sees something he likes, but wants minor changes he can contact the author of a given logo and ask them to tweak it.
My 2cents.

Risto,
I guess those of us that are all THUMBS are out of luck
Rich,
I knew you could do it

There you are John, that didn't hurt to much did it? And we still got the punch line.

Hi again,
Here is another try. A couple sizes to show how it scales.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated
Wow! What a thread!
Interesting to see all the differing interpretations. I'm hoping to get something posted but am trying to play catch up today so we will see how it goes.
Risto - your logo absolutely rocks man! It would be my no.1 choice, no doubt about it.
