Frank, you are, I believe, missing a crucial step from your example. After you created your text, you did not apply an effect to it before applying the extrusion.
Therefore you could not see how that effect is altered by the extrusion tool.
Any effect applied to the text is still editable as indeed is the text itself, if an extrusion has not yet been applied.
I do see however that cloning the extruded text and removing the plugin effect will mean that the extruded text set to 1 will indeed fit neatly over
the other extruded text.
