PSP Pen tool, need lines, not closed shapes

Hi,
The pen tool in PSP XI has me confused. I've selected the pen tool and when I draw on a vector layer (it's the only layer), I get solid shapes. In other words, if there is a curve in my line, I end up with a solid shape of which the edge comprises the line from start to finish PLUS a straight line from the finish back to the start. I'm after just the line.

What I'm after is to write out my signature. Ultimately I want to create a signature stamp in Nitro PDF with a transparent background so when I "sign" a document, it looks like a signature rather than a white rectangle that blocks out the underlying PDF form.

I'm thinking the pen should draw a line, not create a solid object. I've tried twiddling with all the pen attributes, but to no avail.

basic principle - there is a line [aka 'outline' aka 'stroke'] and there is a fill - you have the fill switched on - switch it off

how do you do this is psp XI I'm not sure - but it will be in the help section

Hi,
Yes, that's it. There are foreground and background fill colours/materials. I had turned off background previously and after drawing, and drawing yielded nothing on the drawing area. This time, I also increased the line width (default is zero) and I got a line as intended. The key was to increase the line width.
