I just went to the Vector Magic site to do a trace and found out that it is no longer free. They are also working on a desktop application you can buy once it's ready.

True, but the price is still very reasonable, especially when you think about the time it saves you.

Yes, you can. Depending on your time constraints and the complexity of the photo, you may find that $3 is a small price to pay. You certainly don't need it for every tracing task.
Yes this was spoken about in February if you missed it.
You can sign up and get some free tokens though, also they offer discounts on the forthcoming desktop app of you buy extra tokens when you've used your freebies.
Depending on the price of the dekstop app, it will certainly be worth considering as I've been impressed with their results.
Vector Magic UNLIMITED has just been released. Only $4.95 per month.

Their blog indicates that a desktop application is still in the works, but it has taken longer than they would have hoped. I'm sure that the downloads have greatly decreased since they discountinued being a free service. Hopefully their desktop application will be reasonably priced because it would be a neat little program to own.
