I was refering to light or pale colors (or as some spell it colours). Typically males draw in more intense shades. Blacks, dark blues, deep reds. I agree that to guys do use light colors, but the overall tone is more intense than a what a female will use. To create an entire drawing with the most intense color being a lighter pink is a real effort on a guys part. It does not come naturely.

I was taught the very light colors are called pastels, so that is what I refering to. Not the grease paint type of art colors.

Well I have to disagree. It is not an effort, when I choose to do it.

I really do think its simplistic to look at it the way you do - some male guys may shy away from what they perceive to be feminine - but thats a whole different issue

as for what constitutes a pastel color - ok thats going to differ depending on whether you are artistically trained or not - fair enough

I can only speak for myself, and for what I see from day to day. It is a conscience effort for me to create a piece in lighter, more subtle colors. When I do, the artwork suffers, because it is more forced and contrived. Not natural, if you get my meaning.

Look at the artwork presented here in the forums. The majority of pieces are from males and use bolder colors. When was the last time you saw a car drawing done in peach and pale blue for instance?

Just double checked the "pastel" links. I would say that most of those colors are too bold to be considered pastels. I would call the lightest 3 or 4 rows of colors pastels the rest would be just normal colors. I would call any color a pastels if the HSV value for v was at least 75.

yes John - I was just taking [friendly] issue with you extrapolating your own experience into the general case.

I've accepted the point about pastels - it is not a term cast in tablets of stone

Sometimes a person has to base his theories on partial facts and incomplete data. Sometimes one is wrong, but most times one survives it. Whereas, waiting for all the facts and complete data results in ones death.

Don't believe it... Then the next time you are crossing the street, just stop and wait for all the facts and data to arrive.
