    you need two programs to do this xara3D and xara xtreme.
    the first is the 3D program, and the second is the vector editor.
    the shape editor tool is in xara xtreme.

    in drifters post #7 for example - steps 1 and 2 refer to xara xtreme.

    good question

    shape editor tool takes practice to get right.
    once it is mastered it is easy and quite complicated shapes can be 'cut-out', but it will need the practice.

    however, if this is a one off, and it is relatively simple, then you can try an automatic trace.

    can you post up the image - difficult to advise without seeing it.

    for automatic tracing you can use xtreme's bitmap tracer - but you will need to
    experiment with the settings - it will depend on what the image is like, as referred to in previous post
