I'm trying to follow the instructions on the first page, though it's entirely possible that I'm barking up the wrong tree! The instructions say I need to intersect to get rid of the white frame... does that not apply in this case?

If I understand correctly then you wish to remove the white from the logo image, and to do that you were trying to intersect with the black objects that you had traced?
If so then you need to group the black objects first.
Having done that copy the group in case you loose it.
Then intersect between the group and the logo.
If this dosn't work there are other ways of doing it.

It's OK - I've managed to do it with your grouping, thank you very much!
Sorry for being such a pain.
intersection only works between two objects so you must group accordingly.
look forward to seeing it when its finished

Hoorah! Not bad for a second attempt if I do say so myself
Thanks again.
Hi Chris,
I think what might be confusing you is Bills:
And he's quite correct. However if you select all these individual shapes and copy paste them into Xara3D, what you don't see, but what happens is that all these individual shapes are added together. In Xara Xtreme you can draw the individual shapes without having to cut out.
So you can also do this in Xtreme first if you wish.
The best way is to copy all your shapes and then create a new layer, then Ctrl+Shift+V these shapes in the new layer where they'll be in exactly the same position as the originals. Have only the new layer editable, select all, Arrange Shapes / Combine Shapes / Add shapes. You now have one shape, which should be positioned exactly over the bitmap that you hand traced. Select this as well as the new shape and Arrange Shapes / Combine Shapes / Intersect shapes. This gives you a shape filled with your bitmap.
Arrange / Create bitmap copy. This gives you a texture that will fit exactly over your shape/s in Xara3D.
EDIT: That's excellent. You don't seem to have had any difficulty picking up hand tracing.
I attach a xar file to try to help you understand the texture issue as well as an ani I made 2-3 years back. This used no texture just the four different shapes in the xar file with different extrusions and colours.
THIS IS ALL IN AID OF WEDNESDAY NIGHT OF COURSE !

Thank you very much both! The tracing I managed after watching your very good video tutorial on tracing a cow! The only thing I've not been able to do is the holes at the top of the logo, but maybe as a beginner I'm asking too much - pleased with what I've done so far! Thanks.
I think the one you were looking for maybe this one:

It was the first one I made for my phone and very rough around the edges (so to speak), then it was a case of my mates saying bluetooth my that please.
If you stick with this forum and are prepared to listen and use your grey matter with a bit of time, you can really progress:
I found trial and error the best option for a newbie like me.
Here's one that I made a while after:

I hope I didn't contravene the rules regarding requests, but seeing as these were already done, I didn't think the forum would mind.
Good comments and even better animated gifs vikes.
