I believe Expression 3.3 is still available for free download, and it is non expiring. There is a PC and a Mac version.
EGD is still in Beta. I think the June version improved on the XMAL export. Not something I use.
Warp Mesh is available in 3.3, and strokes, etc. Pixel layers were added in EGD. 3.3 can use external plugins. EGD doesn't presently allow external plugins.
Map fill are good and i have uploaded a few dozen maps to the MS forum. You can use transparent maps in 3.3 as well. I use 3.2 the last Creature House version, and 3.3 is very similar.

A couple of examples with transparent maps. Rich
I downloaded this a while back, but never could get the hang
of it. Anyway, I did find that you can download Expression 3.3
from the link below. It is a free 59 MB download, as Rich said.
Look to the right side of the page, under Quick Links, and choose
the topmost option.

3.3 came with the manual as well.
I was trying to make frames with map fills. Map fills are guided by the shape, and I made a clipper to cut away the part I wanted. Expression maintains the boundaries of both objects. I found that I could make a clipper without a fill, and apply the fill later. So, the frame does not show the end effects.
