Here is a file attached which shows the problem some of us are having with the converting an object with a shadow to an editable shape.

I was unable to reproduce your problem. When I converted to editable shapes, they looked exactly the same as before the conversion. - AF

Have a look at this file. I converted to shapes a couple of times. This makes a new shadow. it forms a whole group, try ungrouping!
Some people might pay a lot of money for such an effect.
