I have had software in the past that I have purchased right before a release and have recieved the upgrade free of charge. I am not saying xara can or will do this for you, but I have seen it in the past.
On the other hand... the upgrade is only $29... You will not have to pay full price...

Xara has a so-called 6-week period of grace. This means that anybody who has purchased X1 within the last 6 weeks is offered a free upgrade to Xtreme, you'll only have to pay for the shipment of the CD (http://xara.com/products/xtreme/upgrade.asp).

If I were you I'd send Xara HQ an email with your login account, the serial number of the X1 copy you purchased plus the invoice number.
With the provided details they can check if the period of grace applies in your case. They'll take it from there.
