Don't know what to call it, but I found some of the bevel extrude effects to be interesting.

For all the folks that do the auto replications ... this could be a good way to simulate wire wheels.
Also, it resembles the "knurls" found on the end of edges of metal dials or knobs.ie, the center dial of a combination-lock on an old bank safe.
Cool image Johoro
You could animate it an add a subtle pulsating glow in the center like this...

Gary - Joroho,
I once woke up with one of those blinking things stuck to my butt.
During the night I dreamt of being abducted by some really freaky looking aliens.
I was able to pry the thing off, but ever since my wife is able to read my mind!
Perhaps it is a mind reading device?
Or perhaps I'm just nuts?

Risto
Risto, ummm... thanks for taking my work down to that level. I really appreciate it. ;-)
Whatever you want to call it, here's how I created it. It all started when I wanted to recreate Soquili's protractor for myself.

Hi Joroho,
That's a great effect you've come up with. Thanks for showing us how you created it.
John's suggestion of using it to simulate wire wheels sounded interesting, so I tried it.
