Hi all. Haven't been here to the conferences for a LONG time so sorry if this topic has been discussed and I didn't see it.

    I use Win 2K and IE 6

    I have 2 questions:

    1) I goofed I guess. I dragged a .XAR file to an IE6 window and it gave a warning message but let me view the file OK. I then went to the Xara site and downloaded the IE plugin and installed it. Now I can't view XAR files. Any help fixing this?

    2) If I have a folder with XAR files in it and I set view thumbnails on the XAR files still don't display a thumbnail. Does anyone know of a plugin or other way to get thumbnails to display XAR files when looking at folder contents?

    TIA.

Sounds like you discovered the "fix" as well as an undocumented feature--the ability to display a XAR file by dragging and dropping it into EI 6--error mesaage or no.

Well, the problem I have not is that since downloading and installing the plugin when I drag a file into IE6 I don't see the file, I just see the little icon at the upper left that indicates it can't open the file.

The plugin seemed to just add a DLL. I deleted the DLL without fixing this problem. I was wondering if it did something in the regestry that needs to be changed as well.

I seem to recall that the Xara browser plugin was a Netscape Plugin – a type which Microsoft stopped supporting in IE5.5SP1 as part of a security tightening (or Netscape bashing!)exercise. Since there’s no Netscape Plugin support in IE6, that’s why it doesn’t work nowadays http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

I have a long list of registry entries that the plugin changes and I suspect removing certain ones will reverse the effect of the plugin. However if you need to import Xara files into Xara3D you’ll need the plugin intact! I’ll post up the registry entries if you wish but use it with extreme caution! I think some of the entries would be shared by XaraX itself.

In light of the above, knowing that it *shouldn't* really be working, it might not be worth the effort/risk of undoing the changes.

I really wish Xara would rewrite their plugin so that IE5.5 and later could use it. Just imagine if they’d got in ahead of Flash for web vector graphics!
