Alot of times it matters not as much how much you know as who you know. If you can, make friends with people at a company you'd like to work for, it may pan out for you in a job.
Jobs that are available are not always advertized in the paper. If you start doing freelancing, and work with certain print shops, they get to actualy see your work and how you could benefit them if one of their employees leave. Often free lance graphic artists are picked up by print shops familiar with their work.
Once you have experience like that under your belt, landing a job at a newspaper is easier, because you have more of the experience they are looking for then.
Every day's a new day, "draw" on what you've learned.
