I think that you are very close. Maybe if you tweak the light elevation a little bit more. Or if you could widen the shaded portion and make it a lighter shade of gray. The one thing I feel needs to be changed for sure is the yellow outline it just throws it off for me. Because of the yellow outline I don't believe it is part of the stone. Another thought is maybe the carved part and the uncarved part could be a little closer in shade or color. I hope that helps.
I think that it will be fantastic with just a bit more work.

Here is one I did for a logo for a client.

I was thinking that I might make an object of the background, and cut a moose hole in it. Then bevel from the background object. Instead of beveling the moose object. So far, it always looks raised from the surface. I thought about finding some better stone texture. I made that texture, and it lacks the randomness of real rock. I made the yellow texture, too. Just didn't have anything that fit the image, and made something. Rich
The moose object was cloned and reduced in size, and combined to get the edge shape. Rich
Now that is believable. Good job Rich.
I especially like that change in the colors of the stone.

Now if the moose is a petroglyph, however, it is The effect really works. Now you need to revisit the moose and try to recreate the way an ancient might have represented it.
The figure of kokopeli I used in my logo design was taken from an actual petroglyph found in a canyon not far from my home. But I did a lot of redrawing and simplifying (not to mention removing a very large part of his anatomy that distinguised him as a male) while still trying to remain true to the original drawing.

Hi Rich,
Here's an attempt at a petroglyph using the fills and a clip art from the Xara CD.
Using the Shape Editor Tool I drew a shape for the stone and game it a Stone 1 fill. Imported the clip-art Edmontonia from the CD and used the same Stone 1 fill. Reduce the clip-art in size so it fit within the stone shape. Clone the clip-art and then applied a contour with inset path. Subtracted that from the stone shape. Applied a rounded inner bevel to the stone shape and adjusted the Light Elevation to 33. Applied a small inner bevel to the clip-art and changed the light angle 180 degrees from the default. Clone the clip-art and apply a flat bleach transparency.

Last XaReg update
an old but good thread about carving stone the xara way. Thought if you haven't seen it you might find it interesting. It continues on to another thread too -- lots to read & see.

I think that is the back leg in prespective. Or, maybe things haven't changed in 10,000 years. Looks like I have lots to read and learn. Rich
