when you export the butterfly image asa GIF with transparency over a dark blue background Rich?
My guess is there will be no white fringe and you won't need to use Elements http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

The export to JPG from the GIF above had a few fringe pixels. The GIF in XX appeared fringeless. Probably the interpretation from 8 bit to 24 bit. The idea was to produce a transparent GIF without the fringe pixels. I didn't have a problem making an opaque GIF. This was just an idea for an alternate method. I like the 32 bit XX PNGs. I have found these very useful. Especially since the transparent areas can be auto masked. I don't use GIFs, but had this iedea from the masking expirments. Rich
too bad it couldn't be implemeted completely in XaraX! I know I can create a background color the same or similar to the one I am going to place the .gif on but it's still got the fringe either way you look at it. The true color .png with alpha is cleaner but a heavier file. So it would be cool to import it BACK into XaraX and then export as a .gif with the same results as what you got from using Elements Rich!!
I just downloaded and am playing a bit with the new beta of PSP. Has a background eraser that is just wonderful. The cursor becomes like a pencil erasor shape and the tool is designed (I believe) to be sensitive to the color that the tip of the eraser comes in contact with and all other areas are ignored leaving all the nice crisp lines in place. There are some other goodies in this package but it only works on Win2000 and XP. Was re-written from the ground up. Fast and furious. I was thinking about you when I was playing with the background eraser, might be something to look into. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
