It's easy to do and it's easy to fix. It's also easy to miss.

Start to reinstall from CD rom. However when
you get to the window that lets you choose easy/custom install; choose custom.
    Uncheck every box. (important).

Scroll down list till you get to Painter 6.0 Default files. Do not check this. Open the triangle. You may need to scroll down some more.

You will now be able to select any indivdual default file by checking the one you require.

Before clicking install make sure no other boxes are checked.

As it is so easy to mess up a brush file by clicking save instead of restore default variant as they are so close, you can easily make a duplicate of you newly fixed brush file and save it elswhere for an instant future fix.

Just trash the old one and replace it with the duplicate. Then make a new duplicate.

    Thelonius,

Thanks for posting this message. Although I was aware that there is that option, sometime back on another list, we had a long discussion about those files possibly not being current with the patches, 6.1, 6.0.3, and since then, 6.1. As a result, since that introduced some doubt as to whether or not installing those default files might set Painter "backward" to a state prior to the patches, we concluded that the safest thing was to create a backup folder immediately after installing Painter and place a copy of all of the default Painter files from the main Painter 6 folder into it.

Still, your solution is quicker and should there, by some remote chance, be a problem, it doesn't take long to Uninstall and reinstall Painter 6 again, then install the desired patch.

Thanks again for the instructions. I'm sure it will save people time and aggravation.
