watercolour-like fx?

Hi,
I am a rather passive member of the group, but I dare asking a little help to achieve a kind of watercolour effect using the tools included with xara (or for that matter, also with corel draw 7 or even webster.)

I have seen many good examples of artwork with subtle changes in colour shades. How do you do this, overlaying transparent or gradient filled objects?

To illustrate what I am meaning, here is an attached illustration (this one was created with illustrator 9's gradient mesh.)
