How to split this shape

[AFAIK, "Slice Shape" is equivalent to both "Subtract Shape" or "Intersect shape" but in one operation.]
I was more intersted in how iamtheblues managed to get such a perfect shape without "Subtract Shape" or "Intersect shape" (or "Slice Shape").
In related topic, can you/someone tell me how to go about splitting the attached image into two parts (occupied by the black regions)? The only way I know now is to draw a line through the handles (at the intersections of the black regions) and then "Slice Shape"... Is there a smarter way.
