Pawns

I need help,
I design this on 3d max the basic idea was taken from the book when i was reading the instance and copy method i just make it as it's shown in book.
i want to make the steel pawns, how did i add the steel effects to these marble's pawns, i didnt know how to make the steel effects using material in 3d max.

can anyone tell me the step by step method?
