I think it's done! I've been working on this hours a day since I got Painter 6 on Tuesday. I may tweak it some more ... who knows.

I really like it. The water is great, and the grass around the tree looks good too. Care to share how you made the water and grass?

Thanks! Well as far as the water goes it was just a shape (arg ... what's the term not a vector shape but a raster shape) with colour and maybe some rough detail with brushes. I know there was lighter colour used for the moon glow on the water and liquid brushed like distorto, smear, runny and just add water. I also opened a water texture and pasted it as another lay so it was visible. I used the soft cloner brush and low opacity to paint in some details in the water but not to cover it fully. I used some dodge and some airbrush and more liquid brushes. When things were merged (layers dropped) I could work on the joints between the water and the cliffs adn such. I used some airbrush for a hazy lighter region, some smeary round brush and lots of distorto. Some more liquid brushes and some dodge and airbrush as well for some highlights and some haze. The vague reflection in the water of the cliff colours was just a brush (actually can't remember now ...maybe dodge with squeeze set to like 40% for a flat oval)

The grass had a texture file and cloners too but much of that detail got covered by distorto brush. Also used airbrush and some dodge for making some tone changes. Also used a bit of liquid runny brush on the grass to make the distorto marks not so straight.

Here's a small detail of it (I made this scene to be 8"x10" at 300 dpi so there's quite a bit of detail)

    David,

I not only like your style, but also your light-hearted imagination, and obvious skill with painting.

You're making great use of Painter's brushes.

    Exceptionally nice work!

Thanks Jinny ........ Actually I just printed this out as an 8"x10" on my Lexmark Z31 at 1200 dpi (have the colour and the photo cartridges installed) and it looks great. I bought a clip frame (glass and carboard backing with clips) and looks alright. The print out is very detailed but it did print out redder than on my monitor. If I can sell some prints like this maybe I'll decide to really get serious about colour management and get some sortof device for adjusting my monitor and printer to give the same results.

    David,

With all my time using Painter, I've managed to avoid learning color management. Partly it's because I don't have a worthwhile printer and partly because it sounds like a dreadful task to learn. Still people do manage to get it figured out so you will too.

I really love your work and wish you the best selling your prints. Have you done any childrens' book illustration? I can see the painting you posted here in a really great book (illustrations always make a book great for me).
