open the bitmap in Xara
you'll see it in the bitmap gallery
make your shape and select the Fill tool
choose bitmap fill
your shape will be filled with the default bitmap
open the bitmap gallery and doubleclick the bitmap you opened.

If you don't work against time, time often works for you.
I don't mean to correct you Erik , but if you want to use a bitmap as a fill in an existing drawing, "Import" the bitmap. (If you open the bitmap, it will start another drawing with the bitmap inserted.) Once the bitmap has been imported, it can be deleted from the page, but it is still available as a fill in the Bitmap Gallery. Any bitmap created with "Create Bitmap Copy" function is also inserted into the Gallery and can be used as a fill.
as I tried it out before answering (science needs experimenting)
but thanks for the tip, and never hesitate to correct me.
I tried it again with simply opening a bitmap etc. and it just works fine...?
See image below. By dragging with the fill tool, you can change pattern and direction.

You talk about an EXISTING drawing, and I about a drawing that is made after the bitmap-that-will -be-the-fill is opened.
In most cases, your approach will be more practical.

If you think you might want to use that bitmap as a fill over and over you can add it more permanently to a gallery. It's not hard but xara wants you to add directories rather than individual files. With the fills gallery open select the "disc fills..." button and proceed to identify the folder containing the files you want to add. I've added several catergorized folders of fills to mine and it works great. - Very handy.
