I have a number of books on PS and, without a doubt, the best of these is The Photoshop 6 WOW book

I'm now using PS 7, but this book is still regularly referred to. It's not the best book for a complete beginner, but if you're already familiar with PS, it's excellent.

It's updated for each new release, so you can almost certainly get a copy for your version of PS.
