Mike, with all respect, but by telling people that it's 100x better than everything you've seen you're advising a tool that might give them a false sense of security.
I know, you're exaggerating, but from an older guy like you I didn't expect a teenager reaction.

    Here's some test:

    http://www.av-comparatives.org/seite...se_2005_02.php

For your information, Avast scores 11th place out of 13 scanners tested, not something what I would call a top score. And this was not even the free version.

So next time when you talk about things you don't understand, go to http://www.wilderssecurity.com/ and do some reading before people get infected because of your lack of experience. And as for your scanner catching all that crap on your computer; with all respect, but that says more about your inexperience as a user than the quality of the tool. I use Kaspersky which is considered one of the best (tests back that up) and I have never caught one single nasty one with this scanner, because I know what to avoid.

Btw, since we're talking about security now; here's a list of all kind of Anti-Spyware that turns out to be useless and trust me, there is a lot out there that falls into this category:

SteveS, you were quite harsh in your post. Mike was relating his experience and his use of 100x was an obvious exaggeration to express his pleasure with the product. Even if it is not in the top 10, if it was of assistance to him then it was worth the post on this section of the forum.

I have a couple to offer, but hesitate if they will be critiqued as harshly as Mike's was....

Since the thread is best freebies:

Password storage: Any Password tool to store passwords, favorite URLS, notes on registrations, etc. Tiny file, easy to use and so helpful.

Antivirus: AVG Free Edition When my Norton died, I switched to this terrific freebie.

Firewall: Zone Alarm Has nag screens but is easy to use and does the job.

Create fast Thumbnails: Easy Thumbnails quickly makes clean thumbnails in batches, has many optimization settings and compression settings.

Tutorial software: WINK This program creates FLASH tutorials. Someone already mentioned the Morphing software but thought I'd mention this one too.

Webmaster tools: Screen Caliper, Color spy and Web tool Three nice products (web tool also has a pro version) that make web building easier.

Backup program: BLAUNCH No spyware/scumware here. It simply creates a backup of your file when you open it. Unlimited copies. Simple

Hi Sam thanks for your post. i didnt reply to his post as it is my opinion he doesnt know me or my level of expertise. i for one am tired of going to a website and it has happened on msnbc a page gets highjacked and things happen. been doing this for many years now things get worse on the net we all know it. i am tired of paying for something to stop something that should never happen. thats one reason i switched to firefox and dont use ie. and everyone is entitled to there opinon and i will not get into a discussion with anyone that wants to bash my opinion as it is my opinon as you stated. thanks for the links will check them out.

Well, another top notch freebie for 3D would be trueSpace3.2

I mean if you are using Wings3D or other, for box/subd like modeling, and you want to get some nice renders, tS3.2 is a very capable app for such tasks...

    Printing web pages on IE...

http://www.visiontech.ltd.uk/software/#ieprint will fit a wide page properly. (Seen in IT section of The Gurdian - UK newspaper; it seems to work!)

    Default Remote Graphics Software

    Hello

Does anyone know of simple remote graphics software (free or paid) to draw in real time from say, my computer and display it in real time across the world on another. I am aware that there is high end and dedicated workstation software about and some available with and in some CAD/Animation modules, but something that we don't have to spend a lot of time setting up, securing and learning would be a great asset.

An easily setup, small footprint program to interact with other designers, artists, clients, family etc. It would be great to have the ability to send an image to a client, hook up and discuss or make changes interactively, efficiently and timely.

    Thanks... Bob

Real late but Apophysis is still going strong and deeper I might add. I used Apop but kind of stink at fractals; it is definitively an abstractionism form of design without question.

Heard that Wings does in fact rock!

Blender is cool but the interface needs an overhaul, definitely not for new bees. I myself gave up on Blender but at the time the B org. didn't have all the tutorial videos that they do now.

Google's Picasa 2 rules as an image manager/cataloger/publisher, etc. etc. features out the butt!

Art rage is cool, the designers of A.R. worked on the Dev team behind Corel Painter. They're cool to boot.

FastStone has an awesome line-up of screen capture, image viewer, browser, and image resizer freeware tools and they work as is said they do which is a blast.

Got TrueSpace 3.2 and must say that out of all the 3d apps that I have used
Cal' TrueSpace got the easiest U.I./learning curve that I have come into contact with in 3D modeling.
