    Hi,

This problem has been present on Windows versions 7, 10 and 11 that I can verify, in mixed versions of both Home and Pro.

    Cheers

Hi Egg, I'm getting the impression people may think this is an operation or a system fault but this is, imho, a Xara issue that has existed for time.

    Cheers

I think it's a windows registration issue, some files are being 'presented' to xara as PNG, when they should be registered as XAR/WEB

running the xara program once as administrtor usually fixes registration issues, unless some other program is over-riding or blocking; if it is a program conflict then it is not necessarily either [any] program at fault, just unfortunate

Hi Chris, here's a post from a while ago. It has a small app that may help you open these xar files that may display this behavior:

Just to confirm, there's nothing wrong with the files themselves.

Once the problem appears it doesn't matter which Xara file you try to open from Windows explorer, they all fail. A reboot of the software makes the problem go away until next time.

And here we go again, randomly I can't open any Xara documents by double clicking from desktop on any xar file.

I now have to close and reboot Xara before I can do anything.

Xara told me nobody else is complaining of this but I suspect because not many people are doing it this way, or working for this long in Xara.

Merlinski, as it's just you experiencing this issue the only thing I can suggest is to reinstall Xara anew and see if this fixes your issues.

Chris, I have hammered a few files on the Desktop, a folder, via shortcuts and from the Xara Recent list. All worked.
You've achieve it across time, versions, machines and files.

The nearest I have ever seen this behaviour was with a wireless mouse and its driver impacting some common port.

Do your files have a common custom template that you used and still do?

All I can suggest is using ExpandXar.exe for some of your files and try opening these instead.

I open xara files by double-clicking in windows, almost always, and have been doing so since I first started using xara in 2003; never seen this

and xara say no one else has reported this

the root cause has to be in your windows setup

it may be that your setup presents xara with something it cannot handle, but whether that is xara at fault is moot; no program is 100% under every possible circumstance

xara is reacting to what it is told by windows, not the otherway round; windows is misreading the XAR files

each XAR file has an image embedded for thumbnail purposes and from memory I think that is in PNG format, if so, that may or may not be indicative

some issues cannot be resolved without hands-on, or detailed description both of the setup and the workflow

    ... just seen acorns post

it is possible there is some corruption in the way XAR files are saved I suppose... but if they open ok, normally, very unlikely - I take it they work fine on another computer/setup ?
