Default Stacking images for exposure control

I’m going to try something. I’ve got an image with two very bright light sources, in this case lit snowmen in a Christmas display inside a school room. Around the brightly lit snowmen are other display items in natural indoor light. I’m going to expose one image for the snowmen only, then another image for the remainder of the display.

Each exposure will have its own layer. I intend on masking one image with the correct exposure for the snowmen on one layer. I then combine the layers.

I’m duplicating the stack process in Affinity photo, but it should work in Xara Pro. I’ll let you know how we do.

I'm interested to hear from you. Did this go well? Looking forward to seeing the results.

Nope. This one failed. In essence you can’t combine layers giving you a compilation of both pictures. Both photos have to be masked. Making one photo transparent doesn’t work either.
Affinity photo takes all instances of the photo, then computes an average, presenting all combined instances on a layer.
Masking does work well in Xara though and is very controlled. Below shows how masking went.
