    Default Importing Raw images

A while back we touched on this subject. I’d like to use Xara for importing Raw images, but I have a suspicion that Xara converts to a jpeg.
I do like the tools which I know in Pro. A raw image contains far more information than a JPEG, offering more latitude for photo retouching.

    Thanks all

not a photo retoucher as such bill - but I know .DNG files will import into pro+ as RAW

there are other formats listed under RAW in the import file dropdown menu for file types

EDIT - that said, I just checked with a colour image and it does not look right to me, a distinct colour cast to the image compared to say affinity... not a photographer me, and the first thing i usually do with such an image is convert it to black and white

Good to know. My photos are “standard” raw. I can try a few different imports. Raw images are large, but offer a greater latitude for correction.

Primarily I shoot “fine, large, jpeg” for websites - but this project is Christmas lights so I thought I’d try raw.

Usually I’d edit in Affinity photo, but I know the tools in Pro far better.

I edited my post bill - there may be issues, I'd ask xara directly

test image came in 'yellow' cast to xara, and 'blue' cast to affinity

there may be a good reason for that, but I just use them for reference

I notice as well - upon import - the image is very large - that's understood - export offers jpeg and png - not raw. So the question is, is the image converted to jpeg upon import? Or is the image Raw. I'll have to experiment so more.

I wanted to include a jpeg with this post - but it's extremely large. That indicates to me that there is much more information in the photo.

    Thanks Handrawn.

The help says very little about RAW.
It does mention JPEG conversion so I guess Xara loses all the luminosity detail.
JPEG has 256 level per channel or under 17M colours.
12-bit RAW has 4,096 levels or 68B colours to play with.

Affinity sets up RAW with a Develop Persona; you can adjust to your heart's content without any destruction by using the Serif Labs RAW Engine.
I assume such tweaks can become a RAW profile to similar images get the same treatment.

Xara offers nothing like the tools Affinity or Adobe have.

makes sense, I doubt xara could handle all that info; which begs the question why import RAW at all unless it is just so you can port it in straight from device storage...
