    I've been studying this for a few minutes. Intriguing! - Is it some kind of trap with bait? And is that a camera and microphone? I'm sure I'm wrong on both counts.

    I believe it is a "galena cat whisker detector", an ancient sort of diode. The whisker gently touches the rough surface of galena crystal to detect simple AM radio signal.

    Of corse the whisker here is a thin wire...

    we were taught about these at school, along with those new fangled things called 'transistors'...
