    Default Re: Xara webspace/html files

I think the problem may be that I have had to split websites in the past which is probably why that one shows seven pages but I reduced it to four putting the other three on another website. What I don't understand is that my files show the four pages c, d, e, f but the Control Center shows folders for a, c, g and htm files of a, b, c, e, d, f. Seems that splitting the website has (obviously?) retained the old files as well. I could delete all the files in the Control Center for that website and then export them back.

I am not going to pretend to understand what appears in the Control Center. Looking at this website which has two pages http://lc4mkm.xara.hosting/2023blog/2023blog2.htm I would have expected to see htm_files folders for two pages but there is only one but two htm files. Am I to assume the htm_files folder has the files for two pages?

Could I do that with the index_htm_files folder (which is from another website) i.e. delete or rename it and then export it again?
No I'm not storing the XAR file on my webspace.
Maybe optimising all photos may be the way to go should I ever get near the 500mb.
    Thanks

Keith, when you publish a site with n pages, you will get n html files and one _xar_files folder. The html files are your content and the folder are the assets that support their presentation.
Your issue is, unfortunately, much deeper.

At some point you probably decided to make an on-line backup. You now have a clutch of published websites with some with a sub-folder created with just a space (%20).

    I have not dug out all the htm files but this gives you an idea of the duplication;

    http://lc4mkm.xara.hosting/orientdia...tdiary-2b2.htm
    http://lc4mkm.xara.hosting/orientdia...tdiary-2c1.htm

I've found your site and page naming convention rather odd.

The safest approach is to open all the design files that you believe are the current ones and set up a local file structure that will be reflected in your publish webspace:

    ..blog/2010/ - call the design file 2010 Blog.xar with first page index, second - index-a, third - index-b, ...
    ..blog/2011/
    ..blog/2012/
    ..blog/2013/
    ..blog/2014/
    ..blog/2015/
    ..blog/2016/
    ..blog/2017/
    ..blog/2018/
    ..blog/2019/
    ..blog/2020/
    ..blog/2021/
    ..blog/2022/
    ..blog/2023/
    ..blog/2024/ - call the design file 2024 Blog.xar with first page index, second - index-a, third - index-b, ...

    and
    ..orientdiary/part1/ - call the design file Orient Diary - Part 1.xar with first page index, second - index-a, third - index-b, ...
    ..orientdiary/part2/
    ..orientdiary/part3/
    ..orientdiary/part4/ - call the design file Orient Diary - Part 4.xar with first page index, second - index-a, third - index-b, ...

Thanks Acorn for you exhaustive research.
I am not aware of making an on-line backup. But computers and phones appear to have minds of their own. Twice now my wife's phone has turned on Talkback without her knowingly doing anything yet should she want it there are four "buttons" she would have to press.

I think the renaming problem is that I just used whatever Xara suggested for the site rather than index. Other pages were not renamed when the files were split.

Once those files are on the web I don't know how they can be removed.
http://lc4mkm.xara.hosting/2011blog/%20/index.htm does not appear in the Control Center so I cannot delete it. It does not appear in my Designer files either. What I may try is deleting all files in Control Center for that site and exporting them back to see if the file disappears.

Publish Website appears to copy all files overwriting the same named files and leaving others alone. Much like copying files to an existing folder except there old files are ignored and updated files are queried.

I will take on board the naming of files. I can see that renaming them all would be a bit of task with one website linking to the next one and the past one. Plus all my bookmarks and everybody else's would be obsolete. Over 48 pages would need renaming with two links on each website changed. Not to mention all the links to all the different years on the blog sites. Trouble is that all sites are prone to updates. Pictures are constantly being found and added.

Again many thanks, I will let you know how the deleting/re publishing goes.
    Keith

Keith, in the Control Centre, you need to navigate to the folder http://lc4mkm.xara.hosting/2011blog/ /. It may appear as http://lc4mkm.xara.hosting/2011blog/%20/.
That is where the duplicated files are sitting.

I have accessed the Control Center for that file but there is only one htm file. I have deleted both http://lc4mkm.xara.hosting/2010blog/index-a.htm and http://lc4mkm.xara.hosting/2011blog/ files from the Control Centre and published them back but memory remains at 458mb.
The 2011 blog still has two files http://lc4mkm.xara.hosting/2011blog/index.htm and http://lc4mkm.xara.hosting/2011blog/ Mystery how to remove a file I cannot find despite deleting the folder it should be in.
