Button challenged

I gather this has something to do with my age. I'm creating a button with the insertion of the text symbol.

Here are my steps.

1. create a text box - insert - symbol - hamburger
2. Make sure the text has a web address. I did not highlight, I just selected the text box
3. Clone and paste in place. My over color is blue
4. Soft Group. Preview ...

and voila! ---er .. no button. Create a nav bar is disabled. I recall something about "you can't make a symbol" a button.

I could use pop up layers of course, but I thought this might be fast and dirty. Where did I go wrong.

Solved it. Asked the same question back in 2020. I cannot make a drop down menu from a symbol unless it’s a pop up layer.
To make a button I need a text element. In this case. It could be 3 dashes on top of one another.

Bill, add the Hamburger symbol as a Shape.
Create a Text Column and add a Space.
Centre both and Group.
Create Navigation Bar.
Optionally, Clone and colour the Group and Place on MouseOver layer.

Alternatively, add the Hamburger as a character insert into a Text Column.
Place a 0px Line width box with no Fill behind and Group.
Do as above.

Thanks @acorn As I understand it, though not mentioned in the Pro+help, there must be a text element in a button. That’s what I had forgotten. One could put three dash in a horizontal column, and manipulate.
Someone had suggested an animal paw for a drop down menu. That’s a challenge. I’d use pop up layers for that one.

When you say, “add the hamburger symbol as a shape” I need some guidance. I believe I’m stuck on terminology. I understand the basics of doing but misunderstand that terminology.

Bill, no worries. If you Insert > Symbol into a text block, you get a glyph. If you use the Selector tool, you get a Shape.

Finally got it and some dissection. Hamburgers on the grill

I wanted a straight hamburger with no mouse over state. Rather than a soft group of components, I just regular grouped and got the menu to activate.
If I wanted a mouse over state I would’ve soft grouped. Interesting.
