what makes me sigh are the sites where the chat/subscribe takes over the screen in the centre, instead of just being down in the corner where it belongs

Nothing lasts forever...
The pop-up when you navigate away or dare to leave the viewing area.
Those with videos, images, carousels and animations with no content.
Those than fail to consider accessibility.

I did ponder that, but then I thought maybe not because it shows that trying to push visitors in a direction that is self-serving is something that needs serious consideration when designing the page/site. Same applies to animations, pop-ups and other fancy stuff. You may think the visitor will be wowed. You might even think the visitor will admire your skills, but they may just be rolling their eyes and pointing the cursor at the Close Window button.
It's about web design. Bad web design, but web design nonetheless.
