    Default WebP question

Using Pro+ for a website, but I’d like to use the webp format for the larger banner images.
If my original format is jpeg do I simply export the jpeg onto another page, save as webp, then import again?

It would be nice if I could import the image directly to the page as a webp but I think I’m looking at that workaround.

    Many Thanks

    None of that Bill.

You just click Web Properties > Website > Other > Include WebP images.

Then any JPEG/PNG will be converted to WebP automatically.

Do you mean that any jpeg images already in your website in the Xara program will be auto converted to WebP? Then just upload the converted website to your server to get the file size saving advantage?

Or, do you mean that any NEW images you add into your website will be converted. I'm guessing the former.

Hi Marky, yes any jpgs within your xar/web file will be published as both jpg and webp. Further if you have retina selected there will be four images uploaded:

    image.jpg
    image@2x.jpg
    image.webp
    image@2x.webp

The server will download the most appropriate dependant on your devise.

gif's and png's are also published as webp files as well.

Due to the substantial file saving it's worth re-publishing your older sites too.

There are good reductions to file sizes.

It's just a shame that Apple with their Safari are the only ones of the popular browsers that don't recognise webp.

ios15 came out recently. The Safari with that doesn't support it so uses jpg instead.

Does anyone know why they don't follow the rest and recognise webp?

To be complete: ... dependent on your device AND your browser. The latter is important as some browsers cannot handle .webp files.

To be really complete: you or the end-user do nothing.
The Xara code interrogates the browser and with a WebP check fail ensures the JPEG/PNG is shoed in.
