In the Freehand & Brush tool (N) click on the Select More Brushes and the brushes will download

run program once as administrator may help

Try this: Without selecting any object, select the Freehand and Brush Tool. Now click on the dropdown window, 'Select an existing brush' (the one in your second post). Is there a button 'Add more brushes'? If so, click it and the default brush selection that comes with your XDA, will be added.
that is the way to do it I would have thought, as egg mentioned earlier, though not in such detail as you
