There are a few settings most either do not know about or understand their import.

The first trick is to look at the Status Bar when you start a Drag (or other operation).
The little nuggets here can be quite revealing.

"Tab to see changes live"
There is an Indicator called Live Drag.
Select anything and hover over it and you are advised "double click to change"

During a drag, you should see a Red outline of the Fill of your shape.
If you press Tab, your shape reburns to its original position, seemingly. This is true if you release your drag.
The clever part is to Tab and continue dragging, you now have an outline of the shape and its bounding box, which makes positioning a dream.

To be safe ensure Num Lock is set on your keyboard.
Snap to Grid toggle is NUM+.; without Num Lock it can act as Delete!

Snap to Objects can be toggled in a drag with S.
Snap to Group is a toggle with G. This "ungroups the objects to expose their snap points.
Angle Snapping is a specialism - A, so read the Help file.

The last important one is Scale line widths.
When dragging, you can toggle its state during the drag by pressing NUM+/.
When On, the Line Width is treated as part of the entire object, so the snap points are to the bounding box/line extent.
When Off, you are snapping to the Fill of the object.

There is no hot key for toggling the Aspect ratio.
I over-ride this by not having Smart Transform On and using Alt+Drag.

To be effective with all these, set your Grid to sensible spacing; check the Magnetic snap radii; read the Help manual.
