Never give up. You will never fail, but you may find a lot of ways that don't work.

Wondering. I have a folder on my desktop that I export my svg image to. Then use the Placeholder to link to the image in the folder. Can I eliminate this step for the sake of just testing the pattern?

    http://www.texturemaker.com/download.php

the Demo works for 30 days, so nice to play around with it
it works still perfect on Win10, only shutting down makes an error which can be ignored/clicked away.

@Xara, pls buy the code and make XaraTexture ;-)
i think i still have the phone number of the guy who did write the program.
unfortunatly the project was not $ucseesfull, so it stopped.
but its realy a pearl of Software. (like Xara
no sicknature. for nearly 20 years. omg ...
For many problems there are simple and easy-to-understand solutions that do not work.

Gary, the short answer is it's hard.
I could code for it using the HTML5 File API but security blocks an initial folder.

What I do is drop the SVG onto any design page the Create a Bitmap Copy and use that to set the Pasteboard.
