    Nope, I was wrong. You can export a PNG with the option that each layer exports as a separate file. But you already know this.

    Photoshop PSD will export layers and retain the layer name.

    a layered PNG is not a standard PNG file format - the only program I can recall supporting such was fireworks

    And Fireworks version was more of a hybrid that supported bitmap and vector as I recall.
